Sunday Night Music Club: Blue of Colors

This week’s Sunday Night Music Club is the song ‘Your Face’ by Blue of Colors - the solo project of Steve Soboslai from Fueled By Ramen alumni Punchline. It’s from his debut album, Small Little Pieces - available now on iTunes.

This compilation, Movers and Shakers: A Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Effort, includes @blueofcolors ”Goodbye Stranger”…

One day my very talented friend Phil called me and said “Hey, I have this beautiful room for the afternoon if you’d like to shoot a video.” I left my house within five minutes and headed to the city.  I didn’t even have time to shave off my soul patch.  All I could take with me was my guitar and globe. Your face in my mind…

"Small Little Pieces" Track By Track Part 1…
Available on iTunes here and CD here.

Hello from Nashville. I moved here a week ago. I had plans to move here for a few months before making the leap. I’ve wanted to try living somewhere else for a while now. Nashville was the first place I came to that pulled me enough to actually take the steps to make the move. This all happened right around the time that I released “Small Little Pieces”. Maybe it wasn’t the best timing for releasing an album, but I’m happy the record is finally out, and I’m happy that I’ve finally taken a shot at living somewhere else. Now that I’m here, I can get back on track with the release of the record. Look out for a music video for “Your Face”, a live performance of “Coordinates” with an 11 piece chamber orchestra, more B-sides, and the story behind each song. Here’s the story about the first song “This Is a Story”. So meta. If you’re reading this, thank you. If you’re a fan of the record, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Post a song somewhere and let me know so I can see what other people think. Thanks you guys.

01 This Is a Story

I wrote this song on November 30th, 2012 in my head on my way to play a solo show in Chicago at Lincoln Hall. I decided on that drive to play my set in chronological order. “This Is A Story” was to serve as a melodic mission statement. It served this purpose so well that I thought it would make for a fitting opener. Here are the lyrics.

This is a story of a girl that I once knew,
I thought our love was true,
but maybe I was wrong.
I’ve spent the last few years at war within myself,
and what it’s left me with
is a story that I’m about to tell.

"This Is a Story" is the only song on "Small Little Pieces" that I engineered myself. Jon Belan (Gene The Werewolf, ex-Punchline) plays the piano on the track. I originally planned on making this available on physical copies only, but when it came time to make the digital leap, I couldn’t cut it.

This song means everything to me. I’m so excited to have built an entire record around it.

“GOODBYE STRANGER”… available on iTunes at www.blueofcolors.com.

I was given a ride.
I couldn’t have crossed that bridge myself.
It was lost in the tide,
Look across to the other side.
Remember all those people,
but I can only see their faces-
alive and they are ageless,
Here I go to new and foreign places.
Pulling through… untie the knot and I’ll untangle you.
Walk away… into the night for darker day.
I never saw myself in the shoes that I am wearing,
discolored and the sole looks like it’s tearing.
Of all the words in the entire world,
I choose to say less is more.
Goodbye Stranger.
Pulling through… untie the knot and I’ll untangle you.
Walk away… into the night for darker day,
then rain, then breeze.
You don’t even notice when the leaves are on the trees.
Just like the day you realize the relief you feel when you’re not paralyzed.
There are so many games to play.
There are so many lives to save.
There are so many bigger things.
What seems so heavy in a year won’t mean a thing.
Goodbye stranger.
